Repainting over anaglypta

Hi everyone,

I've just moved into my first house, so this is really a first-time DIYers question. The hallway, landing and second bedroom have anaglypta wallpaper beneath the picture rail. I like the wallpaper pattern, but hate the colour it's been painted which is a rather unpleasant shade of purpley-brown, which I think makes the areas affected seem darker and smaller than they are.

I was just wondering what I need to do to paint over what's already there, and make it a more tasteful neutral colour. Do I need an undercoat, etc? As much advice about what to do, types of paint etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance!

if you are planning a lighter colour you can always blank it out with a coat of white first if it needs more than 2 coats to cover - just a normal emulsion will be fine , get a decent make - dulux or crown

My painter always told me that it doesnt matter about putting on a "base coat" as he would always put at least 2 coats of paint over the top of it.

I now water my paint down 1 pt water 4 part paint so that it goes on evenly and so I can apply 3 coats.

I am sure everyone has a different approach. I dont particularly go for a "brand" as many of the own brands are just as good, I particularly like B&Q own brand.

The OP is trying to cover
    purpley-brown,

So it does look like three coats.Should the first be 'white' ?? or is it cheaper just to buy the same
    tasteful neutral colour.

Me ! go for cheapest option.
