Carpet cleaners

Just wondered if any of you had invested in a carpet cleaner machine, i.e. a vax machine? Is this worth doing as opposed to getting someone in to do it? If you have a machine, what do you recommend? Are they easy to use? How often do you use it? Many thanks in advance for any help and tips! JT x
