Prom Dress XTRA Cost

We ordered my daughters prom dress in Feb 2010 at a cost of £350.00 (not happy about the cost of dress ) but its a one off and she really liked it, they took her measurements and placed the order, and we paid a £175.00 deposit. Anyway it took till Mid May for a phone call for her to go in for her 1st fitting they tried the dress on and pinned it and arranged a 2nd fitting for June 12th, where we then paid the balance owing of £175.00. They have now told her the dress will be available for collection on 25th June and an extra cost o £40.00 will be owing to cover cost of alterations. Never was it mentioned that they would charge £40 for alterations, If I had been made aware of the exact cost I would have got my mum to sort it as she is a dressmaker.

It does say on terms & conditions.
GOWNS ARE NOT MADE TO MEASURE UNLESS STATED. All gowns are standard sizes and adjusted (where applicable) to customers size. All adjustments (alterations) are charged EXTRA.

Have we no option other than to pay the extra £40.00, or should we have been made aware of how much extra it was going to cost?

  • I think if I had a £300 plus dress for Freda, I would be running for a while, as I would have a whip chasing her for spending so much.

As for the school prom, the rules of playing togger against the public school comes in, go in hard, with the studs.

Not sure if ive been misleading in my post..... My question is do i pay the extra £40? or do i refuse? When we ordered the dress nothing was actually said about extra costs, nor at the 2 later fittings. Surely if they had measured her in the first instance then the dress would require no alterations.

No. Not if she is 'non standard'... whatever that means. ;)

    Because they say...

that's pretty standard. We had to pay £40 for fitting/alterations to my daughters prom dress last year. Actually we got off lightly, some of her friends got charged anything up to £80 for alterations

ok, thanks for the replies, looks like i will have to pay :(. Thing is I still feel ripped off by the fact they could have forwarned me of the extra cost. But shes the last of my girls to go to the prom and will look a million dollars:)

When did they supply you with the Ts and Cs? Presumably you could have asked for an estimate on the cost of the alterations - unless they stated that they were free, I would have assumed that they would charge.

My point in reply was I would not spend the £300 in the first place. When the bell rang at my school, we would be off as we had better things to do.
