( thinking about it, if sunflower oil is made from sunflowers, and olive oil is made from olives, what is baby oil made from .... ? )
As I'm working from theory I can't see any reason why a thin coat of vegetable oil shouldn't do the same thing but it is probably best to go with tried and trusted wisdom as baby oil isn't an "oil" in the same sense that cooking oils are. Baby oil is probably more water compatible than cooking oils and is more easier to remove with a damp cloth/ mild detergent.
If you want to experiment and post your results I'd be grateful as I'm intending to get a stainless steel splashback for my new kitchen!Awaiting a new sig0 -
Baby oil is actually made from crude oil (the BP kind) and is related to paraffin and petroleum jelly e.g. Vaseline.
You don't want to smear cooking oil over the steel as it will rot and turn rancid- mineral oil (baby oil) will not. The same oil would also be used for wooden surfaces.0 -
By far the best thing I have found for all my stainless steel in the kitchen are Sainsburys own brand stainless steel wipes. They are only a couple of pounds or so but one wipe is enough for the toaster, kettle, tea/coffe/sugar jars and the bread bin! You give the item a wipe over with the wipe and polish off with a microfibre cloth (paper towel or a tea towel are nowhere near as good).
Hope this helps!0
