Fixing large solar panels to a roof can be a dangerous task and can cause considerable damage unless you know what you are doing.

    QUOTE]

So can many other things, driving a car for example can be lethal. I highly recommend that if you are a muppet you don't do anything ever.

Not, I suggest, the most constructive post!

So to spell it out S L O W L Y to you,(as you appear to need things explained simply)

The point being made about DIY solar panel installation was:

    A. If you are not capable of clambering around on a roof, it can be dangerous.

    B. If your DIY skills are lacking you can damage the roof.

    Got That?

It would take the Sycorax to get me up on the roof, remember what happened to Rod Hull when he tried to fix the TV aerial.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

yeah but he had a stupid bird in one hand- I would advise anyone going up on a roof, not to take a large stuffed bird with you, especially one that needs the full use of one arm.

Good advise Skiduck, one case when a bird is better in the bush, than in the hand.

Michael Parkinson set up Rod Hull as an act of revenge!

He apparently fell trying to improve the reception of a Manchester United football match. Baddiel and Skinner joked it was the only time Hull had gone down during a Champions League match.

  • Something for Cardew to respond to? An article in the Guardian today, about the economics of solar power...?

I watched the RT program last night, as I have a keen interest in alternative fuels (at least when I can find them which is the REAL challenge).

I was disappointed to find out the real cost savings, are at best £150 a year from your gas bill for a £4000 outlay.

I think I may have answered this point in another posting, basically you are to narrow in your view on how you are calculating your real cost savings. No account is made for rising costs of fuel, savings on wear and tear to the boiler (it will be running less often), and the type of installation will also affect your savings.

One of my friends has 16 radiators he pulled from an old school building being demolished. He painted them black, pumped some water through them and laid them on his garage roof. It goes into a hot water tank and pumped into the bath or shower when needed. Granted you rarely want hot baths in the summer but a hot shower in the evening is quite nice.

Total cost? About £10 for the paint as he ripped out most the copper piping too. But to be honest you won't get that now copper is sooooo expensive.

what are his safety contols to prevent over heating, how is it connected into the domestic water system, is it WRAS approved with particular reference to backflow prevention and contamination. The load on the roof has it been calculated to carry the weight? does it fall under building control regs?

In short DIY is fine but you still have to comply with building control and regulations the fine for not doing so is £5000 +£50 per day for each day of non compliance......
