My Acer Travelmate 2420 cuts out after 15 mins when logged onto the net

my Acer travelmate will shut down after about 15-20 mins when logged onto to the net...really annoying especially when listening to Spotify....I think it may be due to an overheating problem ( the fan seems to be running but very quiet) also when I actually manually fan the computer it seems to last a little longer.
Is this an overheating problem/does it have an overheating cut-out device or is it a virus. When not logged on it doesn't happen.
