DVD - ignore automatic speed detection?

Hiya,

I've got what I thought was an 8x DVD-RW drive, but seems to be recognised by the system as a 16x, but when I bought some DVD+R discs I was told it could only do 4x. There was an option to override the auto detect and write at up to 16x but I didn't click this in case it mucked upo the disc.

Is it ok to force a faster speed thru?
That, is an excellent question...

i have found that the faster you burn the more coasters you get.
burning at 6x has the best results for me and doesn't take that long to burn a 4GB disk.
Ever stop to think and forget to start again?

if the disks are 4X then they will work at 4X max. anything over and it more than likely will fail. you may as well just get faster disks!
