DVD - ignore automatic speed detection?

Hiya,
I've got what I thought was an 8x DVD-RW drive, but seems to be recognised by the system as a 16x, but when I bought some DVD+R discs I was told it could only do 4x. There was an option to override the auto detect and write at up to 16x but I didn't click this in case it mucked upo the disc.
Is it ok to force a faster speed thru?

i have found that the faster you burn the more coasters you get.
burning at 6x has the best results for me and doesn't take that long to burn a 4GB disk.Ever stop to think and forget to start again?0 -
if the disks are 4X then they will work at 4X max. anything over and it more than likely will fail. you may as well just get faster disks!0
