Hi

I bought an item on ebay and paid via paypal. Checked my account online and the payment came out that day (Monday), so I carried on spending on that account. Checked this morning and am now overdrawn by £1 and the paypal payment date has been changed to today. What sort of fee will i incur and could I challenge it?

Natwest regularly take payments out, recredit them and take out again a few days later - is this the same for all banks as its very confusing keeping up to date!

Thanks :)

  • It happens with the Halifax, though as far as I know, only for transactions in foreign currencies.

The approximate amount is taken from the available balance on day 1. On day 2 and 3 the available balance doesn't include the debit and on day 4 the actual transaction shows on the online statement, typically for a slightly different actual amount, plus the fee for the foreign transaction is also debited which wasn't taken from the available balance previously, since it was only incurred when the transaction was processed.
