Lost sound from line out to speakers on Vista.

I am running Windows Vista SP2 with all the latest updates. There is absolutely no sound from the computer when the speakers are plugged into the line out at the back of computer, not even the start up sound when Windows starts. Checked speakers and cables on another computer and they work fine. Have checked all cables and settings, in Device Manager it is a Realtek high definition audio and it says it is working correctly, also speakers are ticked in 'sound' but no sound if I click configure. However, when I plugged the speakers into the headphone socket in the front I can hear what is playing with no problem and Realtek also recognises the line out at the back when I put it in or out and opens it's audio manager. Can I assume from that the sound card is OK?
Did a system restore in case one of the recent updates caused problems, also ran a diagnostic tool from microsoft for sound and audio but it did not find any problems. Was wondering if anyone had any ideas? I wondered if I could also try uninstalling the driver through the device manager and then update drive but not sure if this would cause any problems for me and I don't know any other way of doing it. As a silver surfer I am not too competent. Any ideas gratefully received.

I'd say your sound card is fine and the problem is the audio plug on the back of your pc. Unless the PC is under warranty, I'd be tempted to use the headphone socket from now on and "live with it".
Sorry that this isn't very constructive advice, but short of replacing the motherboard, it's the best I could come up with.In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move. The late, great, Douglas Adams.0 -
Just to say there are three audio sockets on the back: Line Out, Mic In, and Headphones.
Might be worth a look see. That gum you like is coming back in style.0
