Hi all, hope you can help been stitched up like a kipper of plumbers before and can't afford a repeat performance.if I run the bath with hot water then have to put some cold in and turn tap off a loud sort of vibrating noise starts that can only be stopped by turning cold tap on full whack for a couple of minutes.it's started to happen when the loo is flushed as well, the noise is kind of like a very loud deep trumpet that can only be stopped by cold tap at full pelt.am at wits end with it because have just taken in a young person who is oblivious to the sound and am worried if it happens and i'm not here to sort it me pipes might burst!!can anyone offer a remedy or suggest how much a plumber should charge to sort it out? Thank you
RIP Floyd - 19/04/09. I know i'll see you again my best friend forever.

How long have you lived there & how long has it been going on?
And what type of boiler is it?Not Again0 -
It is called Water Hammer.
You could start by turning the Stop tap for the water supply down a bit and see if that makes a difference.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -

Well, it's been getting worse lately but has been on n off for last few years but it's started to get much worse lately. Boilers a back boiler n my heating engineer reckons it's about 15 years old but, touch wood it's still going strong. How easy is this water hammer to fix? Should I get a plumber? Also, I have a stopcock downstairs n one up near the tank which one is the one to use?RIP Floyd - 19/04/09. I know i'll see you again my best friend forever.

Turning a stop tap down is unlikely to do anything.
Causes could be:
Float Valve in loo or cold water tank
Tap Washers (cold taps)
What makes it worse:
Not enough pipe clips
You need to look at the float valves & tap washers first. Then if it keeps happening you can add pipe clips or a pressure reducing valve may sort it.Not Again0 -

Thank you! I ave a plumber coming out to give me a quote monday. I've had a look at the tank in bathroom and I think its where the noise starts. Its getting worse and worse, and my lodger cannot grasp how to stop it so we have to jump up and try to stop it with the kitchen cold tap, which doesn't work as well. So,1st estimate of plumber Monday, ideally he needs to check Float Valve, and Washers then? Any idea how much I'm looking at paying? Am going to get three seperate quotes, hoping it'll be under £100, cos I know the float valves aren't terribly expensive.
Thankyou.RIP Floyd - 19/04/09. I know i'll see you again my best friend forever.

Are you sure you've not got a vuvu horn caught up in the system?Gone ... or have I?0

I would think the ball valve in the cold storage tank in the loft needs replacing.
This would certainly explain the noise after the hot taps are used and could be that the cold to the toilet is fed from this tank as well.0
