please note that I said work, not jobs

You are right, you are not talking about jobs.
    (just watch out for scams)

Did you write that with a straight face?
I look at it is this way. You might as well be building a business for the future rather than chasing 'free' training schemes for jobs that may not exsist.

Yes, invest in a pyramid scam instead. Give David your savings, don't give a training company your grant.

    Pyramid snake oil spammer reported.

Everyone (almost) is entitled to 6 months Contrib JSA anyway so why should I use that for training when I've got bills to pay.
Because you said you were claiming Job Seekers Allowance when you were not seeking a job but "taking a year out".

If you have bills to pay and can't pay them, then surely you would be entitled to income-based JSA.

Ok, let me explain, when I took time out, I only did it because I could afford to do it because of my redundancy package. I was still looking for jobs but maybe not at the extreme as to what I'm doing right now considering I've not got much money left - in fact, looking for jobs and applying for them is quite boring as I never hear diddly squat back.

I'm not entitled to income JSA as I've said due to my missus working full time.
  • I think maybe you should not be so negative. I happen to have been working as a self employed homeworker for the biggest independent travel agent for 12 year now. I know for a fact there is more help out there for those who are prepared to work hard. It's all too easy to knock something you don't understand. If you just thought about it for a while you would realise that some of the biggest scams and rip-offs are run by official organisations who are supposed to be helping people to train and get back into work.

You should look at opening an individual learning account. I am pretty sure it is based on your income not the family income and that will give you some money towards education for courses at recognised providers. Don't know why you are so keen on training. The quality isn't always that great. The longer you are out of the labour market the harder it is to find work. One way that helps you back in is to do some voluntary work and there is a wide range out there. You may also be able to find some in the evening to fit with your partners hours. There are a lot of websites that will help you but depends on your area.
  • I'm probably wrong, but I thought the Indivudual Learning Account scheme was scrapped in England (it still applies in Scotland and Wales afaik , though.

So her, and therefore your, income is too high for other benefits. (I assume you have checked that you as a family aren't entitled to other benefits.)

There are over 20 free training courses run online by a company called free training direct. They cover loads of personal and business skills such as sales skills, presentation skills, interviewing skills marketing management skills etc. All you do is go to their website log on and join their site. No fees whatsoever are charged and you can view the courses which are all video based online 24 hours a day. Hope this may help you.

Go to your local FE college. If you are on benefits, JSA included (regardless which type) you can get fee remission of courses that are FUNDED. This will not include full cost (those that are not funded, usually higher level, professional courses) and will not (usually) cover any admin & exam fee from the college although they college will probably have a 'hardship' type fund available to help. Please dont think that a college means a 2 year course or long term, under the new funding rules we can fund many shorter courses that we couldnt before.

I find this thread a bit weird. If women are stay at home mothers and their husbands work, they don't get JSA and free courses. They are assumed to have enough income as a couple. It's no different for a man. You can get NI credits for being at home with children under 12 but presumably the Child Benefit should be in your name.
