Are we being unreasonable? re Photographer

I'm currently doing cheap shoots for my portfolio - and the average shoot with a model for me is about 100 shots to edit - which can take up to a week of evenings! I'm always surprised people think it's a case of 'guy turns up, takes shots, prints them' - while that can be done with some, I'd be surprised if some don't get tweaked at least a little...

While I appreciate the time and effort spent by my photographer, do you still not find it slightly unreasonable, considering he does it as a hobby and is not a professional. We have now paid £580, which even if he has spent a week of evenings on the pics, is not bad for a weeks work, its double what my hubby brings home:eek:. For a hobby I personally do not think thats bad going.LightPhotographic wrote: »

£580 is only just shy of what I'm paying for a professional service, including retouching, a wedding book and all photos on disc & copyright. I do not think you are being unreasonable, it is a lot of money. Yes you are paying for their time but you can buy a professional's time for that much and given the choice between that or this friend of a friend you wouldn't have chosen him!
Best just to put it behind you and don't be afraid to name and shame!0 -
The ultimate failing of this chap is that he has provided a product but no service and photography is a service industry. It's a given you have to have the photography skills but being a successful jobbing photographer requires much more than that. Without customer recommendations he's going nowhere fast and perhaps that's for the best.0

Hi Manda, I'm glad the matter has now been resolved. I don't feel the photographer intentionally tried to con you, but he certainly shows an ignorance on drawing up agreements and contracts.
My photography work is interior design, architectural, portraits. I steer away from weddings, because I find it too stressful. However, I done my mate's wedding a couple of years ago and included all images on a DVD for him to use, as well as a simple website for his overseas family to view. Even if I say so myself, I done a very good job. I was going to do it for nothing, but they insisted on giving me £350.0 -
glad it was sorted in the end! But I think that's terrible, I do wedding photographry in the Hull/East yorkshire area for £200 which includes a DVD for the couple to print pictures from (i'm also not professional, just an extreme hobbiest!)
Obviously he won't have the professional printers a photographer or printing firm would have, so I think it's downright terrible for him to charge for prints in the first place!
