Western power 13.5k connection rip off

I have had a price from western power to connect our farm building to the mains.
13.5k, I'm still trying to get up off the floor.
What a rip off. No one else is allowed to do the work. We are a small business, we will be paying for this for ever and to add insult to injury we are paying to dig the cable in the ground.

Can any one please tell me how long it takes to fit a high voltage transformer to a pole and how long would it take to fit a new pole under high voltage cables and connect the wires?

Cheers

the reason for the cost will be due to the cost of cableing etc, planning permission , work men, machinary todo the work, I should imaging about a week for 3 phase supply installation
  • Thanks for your reply.

I thought it would take much less time thats why I was questioning the labour costs which come to nearly a half the total cost.
I,m still not over it and it has vat on top.

Surely you'll be able to claim the vat back though as it's a business expense?
  • Hi, yes we can reclaim the vat. We are in the process of registering and unfortunatly the first period is 6 months then every 3. So we need to find the vat money for about 7 months by the looks of it.
  • An independant connection provider will be able to do all the work installing your supply except the final connection which will need to be completed by WPD.

Have a look at all ICPs in your area registered with llyods. http://www.lloydsregister.co.uk/scheme_search.php?searchForm=1&mode=ners

The final connection should only take a few hours, possibly two days if materials need to be organised on site beforehand. You can cut down the costs by doing the cable trench digging yourself. You can install the ducts so they only need to pull the cable in.

A new transformer will probably cost in the region of £6k so the costs are not too unreasonable.
