How much would an average new kitchen be?

I bought my first flat a year ago and had to have the kitchen done with all new appliances. I got MFI, Wickes, Homebase and B&Q to design and quote for the kitchen. That was interesting in itself as they all had slightly different ideas and it helped me think about what my design options were. I ended up going with B&Q for a number of reasons. Firstly, they actually came out to my house to do the design and quotation with their fancy laptops so I felt that they were actually giving me a realistic quote based on exactly what the kitchen was like rather than relying on my measurements which all the others did. Secondly, I managed to get the cupboards in the sale at a slightly later date coz the quote stays valid for a while. They also run promotions like 15% off everything over bank holidays etc so worth keeping an eye out for them. Finally, the quality and choice was as good as any other company. Total cost for actual kitchen including appliances was £1500. Don't get them to fit it though - they are really expensive. Try and find a carpenter, kitchen fitter, whatever (recommendation by friends/family if possible). Total cost including fitting and, for me, all new electrics was £4000.0

Hopefully we will have a newly fitted kitchen by Sept 25th. We went with MFI because even though B&Q, Local Kitchen Company and Wickes were all around the same mark (£4.5k), MFI gave us a 5 year guarantee on the kitchen furniture whereas all the other companies offered only one year.
B&Q was last on my list because they informed me that the kitchen needed its own electrical ring main, which is not a requirement, it is a recommendation. Obviously dependant upon the electrical items you have.
Also, when B&Q provided the quote they asked how did the price sound, I said, not too bad, and was very competitive with other quotes I had received, at which point the consultant suddenly informed me that he had forgotten an item off the quote and pushed the cost up by £500.0 -

If you are buying tiles for the kitchen check Pilkintons out.

I went to Audenshaw, not too sure which side of Manchester you are on, but they have stores in Bury and Clifton being their home.
Topps Tiles wanted £503, B&Q £400. Pilkingtons wanted £160. Also Pilkingtons allowed us to take samples home, whereas Topps Tiles and B&Q wanted us to buy a box.0 -
Manchester_Lucy wrote:Thanks for that. To be honest I think I'd ideally like to be paying for about £4,000 for a half decent kitchen incl install.
yourl never get it hun, if you say purchase a kitchen for 2000 then double it for fitting, then you have your wireing, then you have appliances, floor ,paint ,coving, ect ect it goes on and onYou're not drunk if you can lie on the floor without holding on0 -
We tarted up our small (ish) kitchen by replacing all the doors (about £100), new handles etc (about £20 ikea), a new steel splash back (£12 I think, ikea) and new floor - tile effect laminate (about £100) Fitted it all myself. Just need to find a cheap supplier of worktops / new oven and we've done0

I second that. My bathroom tiles came from Pilkingtons in Bury & I'm really pleased with them. The service was excellent too. I noticed the other day that the shop in Bury is closing down.0 -

Ooh thanks for this. We're the other side of Manchester (Sale) but OH is from Ashton so I'm sure he'll know where it is. I may not have a new kitchen afterall but I'll have nice new tiles!0 -

Go to the Clifton branch they have larger stock(it is their factory outlet) they sell seconds tiles, less than half the price, use the less than pefect ones for your cuts.
It is not far away from you, nip down the M60, sale to clifton 15mins.
I also know a Plumber who lives in Sale0 -
Thanks for that, I'll definitely have a look there.
My ex has his own tiling company so he also said that Pilkintons are good value and Topps Tiles should be good too with their discounts or he can get me a trade deal.
He also said that B&Q are the best for kitchens but not for fitting. Do you think I could get a kitchen ordered using my mum and dad's OAP Wednesday discount or is that only for items you can actually buy and take away there and then??
You guys have all been great, I really feel like I've got some excellent advice.0 -
Hi manchester lucy,
Have you looked at kitchens in Ikea? They are really nice, well built, lots of choice to suit all budgets and not badly priced either...we went on Monday,
decided on the one we wanted..went home, went on the ikea website and used there kitchen planner tool to design our new kitchen...it even quoted how much it all came to!....just over £1000 (no appliances as we already have them) We are really pleased with that so will be ordering as soon as weve had kitchen plastered out.
Not sure how much they charge to install though as Im lucky enough to have a hubby and FIL that know what there doing.
HTHlove my little man he is amazing :j0
