Don't bother trying to fix a leaky gland using PTFE tape. That is not what it is intended for. Cut a small length of string and coat it with grease or tallow.
So that's what they invented string & grease for............
Thank you very much to everybody for your advice-having already bought the PTFE tape yesterday, I used it this morning, and it has solved the leak.
They are right though (apart from the grease suggestion which could end up contaminating the whole streets'/districts water supply) . There is other things that will do a better long term job but for the price of fuel getting it & the cost of buying far more than you will need in yours & your families lifetime its cheaper to fit a new tap.
Its much better to buy some PTFE for circa 10p & it will last for a few summers at least..............
