Advice Needed regarding council and work

Hi,

Not sure if this forum is the proper place for this, but it looks the closest.

I stay in a very rural location with only an hourly bus service. This bus service is extremely unreliable and it has been for years.

The problem is that in my current job, my bosses sometimes want me starting very early in the morning, or working till very late at night. Countless times I have had to call of a shift because the bus has not turned up, or because it has brokendown.

I have applied with my local council and the local housing association to move into my own flat/house (I currently stay with parents). However, I am quite low down on the list.

Is there any suggestions as to getting moved up the housing list. Does anyone think that the council would see this as a valid reason.

Also, any other suggestions would be appreciated. (except about driving, I cant)

Thanks in Advance

Renting with the money that you earn [wages]?
  • It depends on the individual housing provider. Some have a priority catagory called "Hardship", or something similar, which you may fall into. I'd have a chat with them ans see what they say. You might be pleasently surprised.

Rent a room privately nearer work
Ask or pay a colleague to pick you up
    Get a bike or motorcycle
Ask your parents for a lift
    Find a job nearer home
    Pay for a taxi
Ask your parents to kick you out so you are homeless (although you will end up in a B&B initially)

Could you get a bike for now and save up what you need for a flat?

Zazen999, Unfortunately the price of rentals in South Ayrshire are too high, normally about £450-600 per month due to the fact that there are currently only 2-3 bedroom houses available for private rent just now.

Wee Willy Harris, I shall look into it. Thank You for the info.

Elfen, I cant get a driving license because of my bad eyesight, I don't know if trying to bike it to work would be a good idea. (That and I never learned how to ride a bike :embarasse)

You would need to look at a house share, one room with another person or two. that is what most young people do.

OK, it means that most of your income is spent covering your living costs but I assume that you pay your parent board and have high travel costs at the moment?
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • If it helps, there some info here, including an option to complete an on-line application form....

    http://www.south-ayrshire.gov.uk/housing/applying.aspx

But I would also go into the office covering the area you want to live in. They should be able to give you some idea of the waiting time, as well as ensuring you are given the right points. They will also be able to go through any other options worth considering. Single person accommodation is quite often much more available than people realise, family accommodation being in the highest demand.

    Good luck.

It was not far off that in Kent when I first left home 20 years ago.

    Buy a newspaper

    Open it at 'rentals'

    Make a few phone calls

    Go see a couple

Put a deposit down and move in.

    Honestly, i did it in 3 days when I was 18 - it's easy.

But if the OP can't afford it, then they can't afford it.
