Tried to go online today and the server/dns was unavailable.

Tried switching off the router twice to no effect. Checked my son's laptop which was okay so knew it was something on my pc.

Ran ccleaner and did an avast scan. (Already did a malware scan last night). Both okay. Then noticed the internet icon was okay and managed to get online.

On typing 'w' in the url address bar it seemed different. The usual websites are listed differently and there is a star and what looks like a label on the end of some of them?

Going to Firefox help there is a Popular Support Article saying:

SECURITY WARNING: An actively exploited security hole in Adobe Flash 10.0 r45 and earlier can compromise your computer. Please use these instructions to update to Flash Player 10.1.

Help, please:)

Just done a check with this link http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/ (given to me in a previous thread) and got the following results:

    6 Applications Detected in Total
    2 Insecure Versions Detected
    4 Patched Versions Detected

    Programs / Result

    Version Detected

    Status
Adobe Flash Player 10.x Adobe Flash Player 10.x 10.0.45.2 (ActiveX) Adobe Flash Player 10.x

This installation of Adobe Flash Player 10.x is insecure and potentially exposes your system to security threats!

The detected version installed on your system is 10.0.45.2 (ActiveX), however, the latest patched version released by the vendor, fixing one or more vulnerabilities, is 10.1.53.64 (ActiveX).

    Update Instructions:
    Download

    Installed on Your System in:
    C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\Macromed\Flash\Flash10e.ocx
Adobe Flash Player 10.x Adobe Flash Player 10.x 10.1.53.21 (NPAPI) Adobe Flash Player 10.x

This installation of Adobe Flash Player 10.x is insecure and potentially exposes your system to security threats!

The detected version installed on your system is 10.1.53.21 (NPAPI), however, the latest patched version released by the vendor, fixing one or more vulnerabilities, is 10.1.53.64 (NPAPI).

    C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32.dll
    Close

Can I just click on the download links to install these secure versions or do I need to uninstall the insecure versions first and if so, is there an uninstall tool needed?

    Thanks

Last update I did in FF I did not uninstall anything. The update took care of that.

BTW your initial problems getting online ~may~ have been a temporary problem with your ISP's DNS (or some point in the path to it) which had been fixed by the time you tried another PC.

I think all these are unrelated things. Your DNS problems seam to have disappeared.

The different looking address bar is normal for Firefox >3.5 if you have enabled "search in bookmarks and history from the address bar". Either you just upgraded your Firefox or you just enabled this feature. If you create a bookmark you can additionally specify labels, which appear in the address bar too.

Finally the security warning is genuine. Just follow the instructions if you flash player is not up-to-date yet.

    Let's hope so, thanks

Fwor. I must have done something wrong because I downloaded them and installed but going to start/search/adobe flash
it comes up with 4 files:
    install_flash_player
    install_flash_player_ax
    install_flash_player_ax(2)
    flashplayer10_1_rc2_plugin_041910

(I probably downloaded them before but didn't install:o)

Do I just right-click and select delete to get rid of the older versions of these? Thanks

Going into tools/options/privacy the Location bar had 'history and bookmarks'. Changing it to 'history' helped to get rid of the labels, thanks.
I've learnt that the 'stars' are bookmarked items.

I've updated the flash player now, thanks.

Re FF: I've changed the location bar autocomplete option to 'nothing' for now as it was still different from normal (ie. listing older urls?). Need to read up on it all when I get the time.:)

    Thanks for the help, everyone:T

I find this feature quite useful. All interesting stuff I find on the Internet I bookmark and sometimes give it a label too. The next time I'm looking for this bookmark I just type in any part of the URL, title or label and I can choose the right one from the suggestions in the drop down. I delete the history when I exit Firefox thought.
