I quit uni and forgot to change my bank account...advice please!

As in the title I quit uni 3 years ago and just for got to change my bank account. It dawned on me a couple of months ago when i got internet banking and im too scared to tell them as if they send me a massive bill of previous overdraft charges i just cant pay it. Im not in my overdraft but looking back over the years i have been dipping in and out. Does anybody know how much trouble im in? Or is it just a case of changing it to a current account? Any help much appreciated!:(

What do you mean you forgot to change your bank account? The banks would have automatically changed it to a normal account by now surely?

yes thats what i thought they would have done but when i look at my online banking i have a free 1000 overdraft and its still called a student account. I have been working but my account has clearly gone off their radar so im afraid that they will now calculate 3 years of overdraft use or if they are allowed to do this?

Why don't you just tell them you are no longer a student from now.

I must admit my hubby had a graduate account and they gave him a 0% overdraft for many years before they changed it. He rarely used it but it was useful to know it was there.

I wouldn't have thought they could charge you retrospectively. If you are really concerned why not take the opportunity to close it and open another. Maybe one that pays cashback as you have no overdraft you are free to do so.

I cant lie about only just not being a student as i have no degree and i have three years of bank statements showing a weekly wage being paid into my bank. I tried to just open a new bank but they want to know how long you have lived at your address and how long you have been in work for so i thought that would really louse up any possible lies about being a student for longer than I was! Im just tearing my hair out for not noticing sooner as i wouldnt have let this happen and i really am unsure as to whether they can just charge you even though they didnt notice either?

I think your worrying unnecessarily I'd open another bank account answering all questions honestly transfer your paying into it and then close the other one.

You are worrying about a totally non event. This is not an issue and never will be.

Yep, if you had run right over your overdraft limit and where continuing to abuse the facilites they would have closed the account. There is no way they will back charge you because you got a free student overdraft while you were not a student. Thousands and thousands of people do it and they do it deliberately.

I would try and stop worrying and simply ask for it to be converted to a regular current account, best bet is to do it in writing. "I am writing to inform you that I no longer meet your critera for a student account please convert my account to a regular current account, yours faithfully xx". Thay wont write back and ask when you ceased being a student they will just assume recently, they dont have the desire or the manpower.

Is the account overdrawn or in credit?
