portable compost bin

Got an old 3 gallon Ikea rationell waste bin with lid kicking around and would like to turn it into a mini compost bin that I can move around in the small garden.

Is it a must to drill holes around the bin to let air in? can't I leave the lid to air to stop it getting smelly?

You need to have drainage at the bottom. Otherwise, all the liquid will puddle there and it'll honk like a huge honking thing  It'll make slime, too and not compost.

hmmm, if there was a way to create a sort of resevoir at the bottom, he could fit a waterbutt tap and syphon off the liquid for fertilizer - like they do on wormeries.

If you could make a good seal, there's nothing to stop you doing that :)

This portable bin would be ideal for the advocates of using the golden liquid in the compost!

Now I have returned the composting talk to this issue, is there any limit to how much you should be "applying" to the compost or is it as much as you can???
