VHS tapes to DVD

We want to put our old VHS tapes on dvd's
Which is the cheapest and easiest way to do it ?
We have tried using the video camera as a pass through with my PC and a firewire cable, but it doesn't work as we haven't got an av input socket on the camera.
I have been looking at VCR/DVD combos the cheaper ones don't seem to transfer VHS to DVD just the other way round.
Unfortunately we only have a DVD/CD player so that's no good, so if I buy a cheap DVD recorder would that be ok to use and how would I transfer from the VCR ? also any recommendations if I go down that road ?
I can burn DVD's on my PC (R/RW +)
TIA

Assuming that these are non-copyright videos, then you should be able to hook up your vcr to a dvd recorder using a scart cable.Ever stop to think and forget to start again?0

I did it the easy way! I had loads of old family stuff so I bought a cheapish (£90) dvd recorder and did it that way. so easy it was great! quality wasnt brill but then some of the tapes were 20 years old but irriplaceable0

We have decided to buy a DVD recorder.
All we really need it for is transferring our old VHS holiday tapes etc to DVD.
We have a friend with a Philips 3305 which he really likes, we have read a lot of poor reviews on this and also a lot of conflicting good ones on Ciao reviews. We intended buying that model until we read the reviews, now we are not sure
We don't need it for TV or playback as we have a VCR and a DVD/CD player for that. We can burn DVD's/CDs with Nero Smartstart.
What spec's should we be looking for?

Just look for any cheap DVD recorder which has the right input that you need to match the output of your VCR, eg scart or RCA sockets . The quality of the recorder will be better than the quality of the VCR if you pick a high or standard setting.
