Problems copying from external drive

Hi,
A while back, i thought it would be a good idea to take all of my music off my pc and store it on an external drive.
I connect the drive through usb 2.0 and when i do so, i can listen to all of the tracks on there, about 80gb's worth.
However, when i try to copy a lot of the tracks from the drive onto another drive, such as my pc, they won't copy.
The message i would have got would have been that to make sure the drive is not full, write protected or the file is not in use.
None of these were the case.
However, I have also started getting the error message "Cannot Copy File: Path is too deep."
Also, when updating my ipod from the external drive, a lot of the longer sets skip when not finished, usually about 20-30mins in.
I downloaded Power Data Recovery and have been able to copy about half of the files onto another drive but the rest won't move.
I don't want to give the drive to a data recovery company as they charge extortionate prices so i was hoping someone here could help.
I will be devastated if i have lost all of thatmusic which i spent years collating.

a guess !
- folders too deep from the root
eg c:\documents and settings\fred\local settings\application data\jukebox\fredsmusic\amy winehouse\micorsoft\data
- weird when you can copy to, but won't let you copy back
- some, but not all folders/files have a path name longer than 255 characters
- rename some of the top level folders to A B C etc and reduce the length of the path)
What happens now ?Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I try to be an even-handed poster and accept that you at times may not agree with these opinions or how I choose to express them, this is not my problem. i cut one of the paths down to E:\My Music\6 Mix and it still gives the same error.
I sometimes get the error "The device is not ready" as well.0 -

It's permissions problems mostly, but there are a mixture of evils in there, iTunes for example.
What OS are you trying to copy them to?
How many computers do you want to do this on?Microsoft Certified IT Professional x 3 (Vista - Enterprise and Consumer, Server 2008)

BE CAREFUL using this on a system drive, or where more than one computer are involved
I am suggesting you do this on the portable drive, for clarification.
Also, reducing the file name strings is a must.
You may also find that any thing that originated in itunes won't actually play on another computer that you haven't authorisedMicrosoft Certified IT Professional x 3 (Vista - Enterprise and Consumer, Server 2008)

Possibly some help here:
http://mswhs.com/2008/01/30/path-too-deep-error-message-we-have-the-answer/
It mentions a free download called Teracopy at the end. Maybe that will help.
Good luck.0 -

sounds like paths and permissions tbh but have you considered they may be a poss prob with hardrive alot of manufacturers have diaganostic tools as well i would suggest looking up your manfacturer seeing if there is if not get a copy of hirens boot disc alot of diagnostic drive software on there which would checkout the hardrives condition and some of them a fix. on other thing to try i would get hold of someone with say win7 try grabbing from there on another completely diff machine that may help but can only but try.0
