Hi, i just got a 2nd hand 1999 renault cleo (my first car, just passed my test) i took it to an MOT and it failed it emmisions test, a mechanic friend took a look at the report n told me to sell it on and take a loss.... any advice?, report as follows;
Engine speed measurement was bypassed
engine oil temperature measurement was by-passed (Temp Gauge Checked)

Fast Idle Test
RPM: Not checked
CO % Vol: 0.538 Fail
HC ppm vol: 342 fail
Lambda: 1.067 Fail

Second Fast Idle Test
RPM: Not checked
CO %Vol: 0.516 Fail
HC ppm vol: 332 Fail
Lambda: 1.060 Fail

Natural Idle Test
RPM: Not checked
CO %Vol 0.584 Fail

as i said my friend told me to just sell it on and take the loss, but i'm not so sure, i quite like it and i'm not sure if he's trying to encourage me to buy a car from him. I'm willing to spend about 300 getting it fixed and the other repairs should cost £100, so is it possible to get this passed for £200?

Take it elsewhere and get it retested.....

My ex had her car fail it's MOT for something similar and because the cost of repair was really high she decided on another car, she then brought a Ford Fiesta worth no more than £450 from the same garage at a shocking £1300!!!

    I WAS SERIOUSLY !!!!ED!!

Does the car warm up ok, and the temperature gauge read about 90, or in the middle of the gauge?

What is your 'mechanic friends' diagnosis to be able to write a car off on an emmisions test?

It could be a lambda probe fault, cat, EGR issue, or one of many things but quite possibly a fix with £300 to throw at it.

    Hmmm

It is possible that the car wasn't up to temperature so was running on cold start.

temperature sensor, lambda, cat/egr in that order I would have said.
Unless there is an air leak somewhere.

Really needs diagnosing 1st. Cat/EGR would be more than that, but a lambda/temp sensor/air leak could or should be much less than £200. we've not established if it's petrol or diesel? If it's diesel it may just need a fuel flush, new filter and a blast down the road...?
