To turn the wireless access point off on your Sky router log in with

    http://192.168.0.1

    user admin
    password sky

Then go to the wireless setting page and untick the appropriate box.

It may be that just changing the wireless channel on the Sky router may improve things.

You can monitor all the wireless signals the PC is picking up with inSSIDer which is a free download, then move to an unoccupied channel.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Sky uses adsl, so if you wanted to replace your sky router with a new one, you'd ideally need a router with an adsl modem built in. From the sound of it you've bought a router without an inbuilt modem. If you want to use your new wireless, then you'll need to disable the wireless on the sky router, and connect the WAN port of the Belkin to a LAN port on the sky router. ALternatively, if the belkin supports it, switch it from router mode to bridge mode, in which case you may be able to connect the lan port on the belkin to the lan port on the sky router. IN this way, wireless clients will connect to the belkin, the belkin will transfer date to the sky router, then it will go out to the internet through the inbuilt sky modem.

Not sure its easy to replace the sky router with another. Sky send their routers out with the adsl username and password already set and there is no easy way to get them out (Sky support are not allowed to give them out either, I've tried!)

I want to do exactly the same as the op, the sky router seems quite poor in comparison to my old Zyxel, I guess it doesnt help not having an aerial sticking out the back! :(

A wifi repeater will work - but you may see poorer speeds, since the repeater connects to the sky router by WiFi, so all clients connected to the repeater share the wireless signal back to the main router. If you can't replace the sky router with a different router/modem, then a wireless bridge is probably easiest. Check if your belkin can operate in bridged mode, in which case that's your best bet. The belkin would be wired to your sky box via the lan ports/cables & would essentially take over the wireless functions.
