New Replacement Items Still Under Old Warranty Period? Is this Correct?

Need some advice on a warranty issue that I’m dealing with at the moment.
I’ve got a pair of electronic items that I bought new and that originally had a 2 year warranty that was due to run out this October 2010. I’ve noticed recently that their performance has really dropped, so I contacted the company and they have sent me 2 brand new items (the same as before) under the terms of the warranty.
The problem now is that they are saying that the warranty on these new items is only valid under the duration of my old warranty. Hence, it will run out in October 2010, and not in 2 years time as would be the case if I had bought the items new from a retailer.
I’ve gone back to the company to challenge this saying that I don’t think it was fair that these new items would only have a 4 month warranty until October 2010 (under the old warranty) since they wouldn’t honour any new 2 year warranty on them. Their reply thus far is that if the items fail after the old warranty expires (in October 2010), I would have the chance to purchase new items from them at a reduced price, even though they would effectively still be within the 2 year warranty period if I had bought them brand new in the first place.
Firstly, is this right?
Secondly, where is the legal position on this? If the items go faulty outside of the old warranty period, but still effectively within any new warranty period (which the company will not honour), who pays the costs for replacement?
Appreciate any advice/help.

Are you honestly expecting to get a replacement every two years for free?If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

This is correct, yes.0

There is no 'new' warranty period. Replacement items warranty runs out in October as per the original items. They are going further than they need to by offering you a discount if they fail after October.0

This is correct.
Usually on warranty replacements they give you something like 28 days or until the original warranty period expires, which ever is longer.0 -
As they replaced it under their warranty they can make up whatever rules they like. Now your actually right under SOGA are a different story.0
