Where Did TalkTalk Get My Number From?

I have 2 landlines coming in my home - a Virgin one exclusively for my work and the telephone number for that has never been given or used any details in any forms, etc.

With Virgin I have 'no Service calls' and indeed do not receive any at all from them or their partners.

But today, TalkTalk tried to call me - now the only time I have ever contacted TalkTalk using this telephone was regarding a query I had on an email account I have with them. I did not give them this Virgin telephone number and quoted the BT one given on my account details.

My query with them was resolved - but it appears to me that they must have noted my incoming telephone number and are now using this for Marketing; when I tried to call back, it said they would 'call me later' - but I don't want them to have this number and moreover call me on it as this is a dedicated line for my work with a special hook-up which can affect how I receive incoming calls from my employer.:(

How can I ensure that talktalk do not call me ever again or pass on my number to any other firm?

Many Thanks!

Register the telephone number with TPS.

Register the number with the TPS?

Then, if you continue to receive calls you can complain.

Well you can register the number with the TPS (although be aware TPS doesnt cover you if you give out your number - which you havent done so you should be safe). Tell talktalk not to contact you on that number and tell them they have no permission to store personal contact information other than that which you provide to them. Personally i'd ask them where they got my number as - like you - i dont give my home number out on any forms etc.

Check their terms and conditions to be sure but i cant imagine they have a "if you call us, we will use and store that number and use it to contact you in the future". I mean for all they know, its not even your number :S It could be a friends, neighbours etc.

My recollection is hazy but i'm sure theres a part of the DPA that states you can request that information/certain information cannot be collected without your express consent and that the "collector" should comply unless they suspect you of breaking the law (for example). Although it has been some years since i researched DPA!

I can't login to my details as I asked for my account to be cancelled so the system does not recognise me - though bizarrely enough, I am still getting all the spam emails AND can login to my web based email account; but it won't have let me go through to 'my account' bit.

    Have now registered TPS!

    Thanks guys!:T

    Hi Dollydiva,

As you have services with TT (the open email account) TPS wont necessarily resolve this issue as TPS make exceptions to companies with whom you have services.

If you use the contact us page to request a marketing opt out this can be implemented for you and can take upto 28 days.

I would advise to register on the TTMF forum for this to be addressed but as you no longer have an active TT account you will unfortunately be unable to do so.

  • Talk talk dont follow TPS they ignore it, we registered tps 12 months ago and we get numerous calls from Talk Talk trying to sell us broadband etcKeep telling them im not interested, tell them they are breaking the tps rules but to no avail! they still ring we have even threatened to contact offtel or ofcom which ever one it is. but no they still call!

they even get nasty down phone with us when we tell them not to ring anymore as we are not interested in their offers! we do not want to get rid of our pipex and go on for them!

Infact i am looking for new broadband/phone provider as i just found out this aft that talk talk took over my broadband provider last year! had i of known i would of swapped last year!

They are a law unto themselves!
