Sending my card details through the post.

I'm completing an order form which requires my signature and my card details and the card security code on the back of it. I then have to send this form through the post.

I'm so used to ordering things online its been a very long time since Ive had to send a form with all that info via the mail.

I'm just a little wary about the potential consequences if this form should get mis-delivered or lost in the post. With all those details and my signature!

From what we are told about our responsibilities to keep these details safe and secure it feels very compromising.

Does anyone know how the banks view this?

Is there an alternative method of providing these details which is "more" secure?

Maybe I'm just paranoid but the last time I gave out my card details , which was over the phone, the very next day two fraudulent transactions were charged to my account. My card had to be cancelled.

I'd be interested to hear other points of view on this.

Thanks.

Does the company not have a website to order from? No way would I send that info through the post. Could you not use a direct debit instruction instead?

Hmm your opening comment affirms my concerns.

Theres no way to complete this online. They require a signature on the contract/order form. This is to pay for advertising my business in a brochure. They do offer monthly repayment by DD but I prefer to use my card as it helps with cashflow.

That in itself rings alarm bells for something purchased this way.

Yes, there have been all sorts of scams for advertising in publications which either never appear or are never distributed. Be careful.

    P.S. Google brochure advertising scam

There was a time when credit card details like these was sent off all the time - by post and by fax. Now my two concerns would be:

    1) Giving the signature as well as the card details - chance of ID theft (someone writing to the CC company and getting the addressed changed etc.)

    2) Is a CCA buried in the form somewhere - so you are recharged further payments and it's difficult to stop.

Think I'd offer to send a cheque or BACS if you are worried enough to be concerned, but not so concerned as not to continue with the transaction.

Do be careful with these contracts. Aside from the total scam element, a lot of them have auto-renew conditions that make it difficult to stop them. A friend recently had trouble getting out of one of these - the contract was drafted so he had to phone up and confirm in writing during a period of just one week every other year if he wanted to cancel. There was some wriggle room as there was a mistake elsewhere on the contract - it went to court but they settled just before the hearing.

Perhaps you can take in person or pay from that account by cheque. If its a one off payment then why give them access to take anything they like from your account. They must be a tiny local company if they don't have a website. I would have alarms ringing at an advertising company without a website. Its the best value advertising?

    ABSOLUTELY NO WAY!!!

As someone else has posted, the advertisement offer is almost certainly a scam.

    I've often seen it requested.
