Yes, I went through all the questions when I set up my Barclay account last autumn. I did interrupt partway through all the hobbies and such questions and asked them exactly why they needed to know all this and all I got was some drivel about getting to know customers to provide better services for them. I don't like answering personal questions like that when it's not necessary, so I was a bit vague, and a couple I simply told them I didn't think it pertained to the matter at hand. I got a raised eyebrow on that, but I was still approved.

as an ex barclays employee, i can let you know u can just walk in and get an application and get them to stamp copies of your ID and send it off to be done centrally, the reason they book you an appt and tell you its an hour is coz of mystery shopping which they get once a month and also extras by the FSA checking up on what they're response is when you ask for a "basic bank account" or "cash card account" as they are not allowed to try and offer you a full current account if you request a basic account. Also asking lots of questions is part of the process of the customer discussion document they have to fill in (or fill in a bit/or fill in after you've left) if you're opening any type of account. So i suggest if you dont like the sound of any of those bits, just don't see a personal banker at all and get the application to send off yourself :D saves loads of time!
