Depends what kind of email account you have, IMAP or POP3.

With IMAP it's no problem at all. All your emails will stay on the server. If you mark an email as read it will be marked read across all email clients you use.

With POP3 it's a bit more complicated. By default emails will be downloaded to your client and deleted from the server. Once you downloaded the emails with one client, you can't download it again somewhere else. However most email clients have the option to leave a copy on the server when downloading new emails. But when you download them on another client they will all appear as unread even though you might have read them already on another computer.

Who do you have your emails with? If it's GMail then you can use IMAP, but you have to set it up as IMAP in Outlook Express.

Best option is to set up netbook to leave messages on server and use desktop to download fully (ie not leave on server) or set both to leave them on the server and delete them using webmail client.

Do you use Outlook or Outlook Express ?. I guess the options are similar for each , however I normally use Thunderbird which I am more familar with, when the OH get's off of my desktop I will have a look at my outlook(2010) to refresh my memory, I only use outlaw for syncing to my phone.

GMail supports IMAP and is far better for such things as I explained above. What software does your own email server use?

Hi again, yeah I have the same on outlook to leave on server, via account settings/advanced , however as tronator says imap is a better option if available on both servers. If not then it depends how much space you are allowed on your Bt server, and your own domain. If you set one of the pcs to delete from server when deleted that will alleviate that. I presonally use my thundebird to leave all on the server for my mobile devices, and just use the in house pc to delete. Of course if you delete from the server when downloading at home you can't access them from the mobile again from the server.

Hi ok i have discovered all my email accounts support IMAP a couple of questions as i do not use the netbook that often will it still download all emails the next time i turn it on even if i have deleted them from my desktop computer? Also it was a bit confusing about the emails are stored on the server and may use your storage up quickly is it easy to delete emails of the server?
    regards

If you delete an email in an IMAP account on one of the computers, it will be deleted on the server too. The next time you start your email client on the other computer and sync your emails, this email will be deleted there as well. That's how IMAP works basically, it's a two way sync between the client and server.

If you run out of space on the server you could "archive" some emails by dragging it into a local folder in your email client or even into another IMAP account where you have more space.

I don't know how good OE handles all of these. I remember the last time I looked into OE the IMAP support was really poor and I think it's not developed anymore. Have a look at Thunderbird, with IMAP you could even use both on the same time and see which one is better.

I'd probably setup gmail to retrieve your pop emails and filter them into folders, then use imap to access gmail.
