British Gas Bill Issues

Hi all,
First time post - hopefully you'll be able to help.
Background - moved in to a flat just over 2 years ago. Over the past few months we have been receiving letters from BG stating that we have not been paying the bill etc, however opened the post before checking (we live in XXX Court and this was this was addressed to another court (that I am not sure exists), and with a slightly different post code (it was an A instead of a
. Looked the post code up and its a couple of shops over the road to us.
Anyway so we rang BG and said look received this, opened without reading its very similar to our address, and the same flat number, but we opened without reading and obviously the post is coming to us so we dont want their heavys coming around.
They confirmed that they had not got the address wrong, and it was the postman delivering to the wrong address, asked if we can speak to the postman - which living in a flat is easier said than done!
Anyway continue to receive a few more letters and called them again, they told us not to worry, not us, etc.
Today got another letter and it says they have a warrant to enter and fix a pre pay meter / disconnect us.
Where do we stand?
All the letters are addressed to the occupier - not in our name, and to a different Court / different postcode (Albeit they are very similar post codes).
Also forgot to mention that our letting agency told us that we are with eON for dual fuel.
Just checked the eON bills and they are for Elecy only or so it seems....
Thanks

Do you still have the bills? They should have a meter serial number on it. Compare this with the serial number on the meter.
This will confirm if the bill is yours or not.
If it is not, BG won't be able to enter your property as any warrant they get will be for the other address, not yours.
I'd let BG know that if they enter your property illegally without a warrant you will charge them for any and all damage caused, with an addition for the damage to your social standing having them force entry to your address (worth a go).
As for any further letter, deliver them to the right address yourself - might be worth leaving a note for the postie.
They have a fair point though - if they are putting the right address on the envelopes the fault lies with either the postire or the guy at the sorting office.0 -
How do you pay your bills, may ask. How do you know what being paid? You had to ask the LA does this mean you paying direct?
If its a different Postcode and first lien there warrant is invalid even if its a mess up with your bill although it doesn't sound that way.0 -
Hi DerKaiser - The last line of your post mentions that your bills from E.on are for Elect.only, despite the fact that you also have Gas - Does this mean that you have not had, or paid a gas bill for the past 2 years?
If you have not, some supplier even if it's not BG, is going to land you with a hefty demand sooner or later
As mentioned by other posters, check as to whether or not that the number on your meter matches that on the demands from Brit. Gas TODAY
BG may have been at fault in incorrectly addressing your bills, but if you just let things run their course, you will end up on a credit meter with a big bill to pay off.
If it turns out that BG are indeed your gas supplier they will present a BIG bill, but if you are on an E.on tariff that has discounts for D/D payment and/or online billing, you can argue with BG that if thay had correctly addressed their billing at the start of the account, you would have opted for a gas tariff with discounts at the beginning of your tenancy, and that the bill should be reduced accordingly - Don't wast time on the phone with this - WRITE A LETTER
Good Luck0 -
Regarding post being incorrectly delivered to your address, do not open, but mark the envelope as 'NOT XXX Court' and put back in the nearest post box. RM will get the message soon enough."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100
