Confused about BT - Unlimited evening and weekend plan

During a call from BT last week I was persuaded to change our plan from unlimited weekends to unlimited evening and weekends. The bill is in my wife's name but the chap on the phone didn't have much of a problem changing the account for us just from talking with me. He told me that going onto this plan would not cost us any extra, so I agreed, not something I would usually do over the phone. He then reeled off the t&c's, I heard the phrase '12 month renewable contract', and this set some alarm bells ringing.
Since then I have gone through our old bills and found that, because we hardly use the phone, evening calls costs us almost nothing over 3 months, so I rang BT today to explain that I didn't want to be tied into a contract when we will hardly benefit from the plan. He said that if the plan had been finalised then I may have to pay a charge, so I mentioned the distance selling regulations. He then looked on the account, and told me that with the new plan we would not be in a contract, and that if we wanted to leave at any point in the future there would be no charge. I said that that is contrary to what the BT website says in their t&c's, and that they state that the unlimited evening and weekend plan costs £2.99 a month, or free if agreeing to the rolling contract.
He spoke to cancellations, and came back to tell me that they had confirmed I would not be in any contract because I had had my line rental with BT for so long, and that it only applied to new customers, so I could leave when I wanted with no penalty. I asked him to take us back onto the old plan anyway, as I didn't feel confident in what he was saying.
I'd be interested to know if anyone else is on the Unlimited evening and weekend plan at no extra cost and is not on a 12 month rolling contract. I don't want to imagine that BT were lying to me, but that is the thought in the back of my mind. Or would it be worse if it was just the fact that the lad didn't know what he was talking about?

You are right.
How long you have been a customer is irrelevant and the new customers only part is BS.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
I thought as much. It's worrying to think that the people who work for BT don't understand or know the t&c's, or are happy to mislead customers. I don't have any plans/needs to leave BT any time soon, but I'd rather have the freedom to leave when I want, and not have to wait till a contract runs out.0

Sounds like BT's Unlimited Weekend Plan and a 18185 account for weekday, weekday evening and mobile calls would suit your usage pattern.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
