Fixing cracked plaster

Options
Dear all,
I have cracked plater on various walls, it is not falling off. Taking it off and redoing it is a huge dusty job. I was planning to coat it with PVA and then plaster over it.
Can any one kindly suggest any other way I can fix this so that I can paint over it.
regards,
seb

When you say cracks do you mean tiny little hairline cracks on the surface or chuffing great big ones? Tiny cracks you can ignore - bigger ones need attention. Rake them out and enlarge them slightly, overfill and sand back. If its still as rough as a bear's bum then use a heavy grade lining paper and paint that.

If the surface of the "cracked" plaster is nicely polished whether you PVA it or not you won't get another skim to stick to it.

    Cheers

    Many thanks Keystone,
the surface is nicely polished, plastering seems more like thick cementing and is quite hard. I am nervous about raking and enlarging the cracks, in case all of it come down and dust will make life difficult. I think I should try using a grinder to make the cracks bigger, what do you think?

I have a chuffing great big one that runs ceiling to floor. What do I use to open it up with and rake it out. Its arrived when the temperature fell to -17 and a powercut took out the central heating.
