Logged onto my internet banking tonight to find that some kind soul/souls have paid in the nice sum of £2030
Immediately phoned the bank who comfirmed it went in over the weekend... but because it only cleared today, they do not yet have a name from the transaction, only that it was paid in via my debit card!
After a bit of thought, i have an inkling that it is money from the returned travellers cheques i sent back, it was due to get paid in in the next day or two, but theres a big difference between £170 and £2k!
Now im a genuinely honest person, but if it was them and they dont realise...... how tempting! Does a certain length of time have to pass before it is 'legally' mine (if it ever is, in fact).

Nope, it's never yours. You are allowed to keep the interest earned while it's in your account, but you need to contact the bank as soon as you genuinely believe it's not yours, and they can withdraw it (they'll ask your permission, but you'd be advised to give it). Any attempt to withdraw it or move it to another account is deemed fraud.0

How about telling them it's been taken from bills but you are prepared to pay it back at £10 a week or something? Would that be legal? In the spirit of gloating... you what... I can't gloat on this site anymore? Awww, how unfair.

I`ve had this happen to me. Except it was someone elses loan that they`d applied for over the internet, that had somehoe made its way to my account.
I contacted the bank immediately and was given a £25 goodwill credit.
My logic was that if they ever came looking for the money and i`d spent it, i`d have to pay it back.
