Back button and others not working - confused

Have a new (ish) laptop runnings windows 7 and IE.
Suddenly and for no reason at all (i hadnt changed any settings or anything) the back button has stopped working.
Now today the favourites menu has stopped working too, i can access the drop down menu but when i try and press "add favourite" nothing happens.
At first i thought it was a fault with the mouse button, but that is fine in every other way.
Have tryed shuting whole laptop down, which has made no difference, anyone else having same/similar probs or any ideas what to do?

try ie, tools, internet options, advanced, reset.!!

When i go to the tools menu it wont let me access internet options (i can see it, but its in faded writing and won't let me click on it.) any other suggestions?0
