dvd/cd drive

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300D laptop, and it can write cd's but not read them and read dvd's but not write them. Is this a software problem, or has my drive gone? If the drive has gone I'm assuming it will be expensive to fit a new one (in a laptop), and as I rarely take my laptop out of the house I'm thinking an external drive may be the answer- any recommendations?

    I am running vista home premium. There is a pre-installed Toshiba disc creator, and Windows dvd maker.I have not installed itunes.Thanks.
