Claiming DLA & IB in a motorhome

Hi, Im 57 and in receipt of DLA & IB, my carer lives in.

I would like to live abroad and read I would be able to claim benefits still, but don't take well to foreign food and worried about Doctors and medication etc.
A friend suggested me buying a motorhome and travel round this glorious country we have. ? My carer has offered to drive and it all sounds good....But would claiming still be okay?

I have e mailed the necessary departments, they simply say let them know when I'm off etc. !!!

I can use my friends address as a temporary one and could always travel back should the department need to see me or whatever.

I thought we could do this for a couple of years or so and the financial saving to the council for my home rent would be a huge saving for them.

Any one done this or knows more ? Thank you in advance.

There are loads of websites and groups on the internet dedicated to people who live in vans (motorhomes, campers and so on). Have a good google on search terms like 'living in a van'. Oodles of advice on how to pick a motorhome or convert one, the best water/heating/cooking systems, where to park for free (people swap tips on the best places).

You could probably find good websites and forums that actually specialise in people who live in motorhomes.

Some long-term dwellers prefer 'stealth' vehicles. These look like ordinary vans from the outside but are kitted out properly inside. The reason why they opt for this is so they can hide in plain site and park in beauty spots, car parks and residential places without getting hassle or moved on than if they lived in an obvious motor home.

In the US, the preference of those avoiding expensive camp sites to park for free is known as 'boon docking'.

Hi,Think you've misread my question here. I don't want to go abroad or stay for free by road sides. Quite happyto go onto sites around England.

But main thing is my DLA & IB payments, are they still available to me and my carer ?

Well I can't see a problem, you are still in the UK. I'm sure many other "travellers" claim their benefits also.

It will be much easier if you maintain a fixed address somewhere. Remember insurance, vehicle registration, bank , doctor , dentist etc, all these things require an address. I have no experience of living on the road, but have lived on a boat.
    Can't you register at a family/ friend's address?
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !

I can't see why you would have a problem claiming DLA, IB and carers allowance for the carer as I would assume that these are tied to the person, not a fixed property, particularly as you've already contacted the relevant departments and they have not disputed this. Others will be able to advise.

Well they just say let them know when we will leave, but nothing stated about benefits continuing.
I know many have had problems with this abroad. But was hopeing some one out there may have or is currently in a similiar situation, in Britian, to what we intend to do.

Thanks for all the help everyone.
  • AFAIK you cant get dla mobility if living abroad
