William Hill asking for my bet back...

As somebody who has used a bookie on hundreds (if not thousands) of occasions for Matched Betting and Financial Trades, I can say that it is normal practice for them to 'hide behind T&C's'. I had a bet only a couple of weeks ago that was voided online, because the computer gave the wrong price. Surprisingly it won!!
When anybody goes into 'the land' of bookmakers 'Caveat Emptor'.
As for the voided bet, after off time, I don't think I've said that I disagree with this comment. Makes sense!! I disagree with the odds side though - there are a number of threads on how bookies, have tried to worm their way out;)
People who just write their own prices onto bets without getting them countersigned should, according to the rules, be given SP.

Well speaking as a Coral manager if a price is written on a bet and signed by a member of staff, it should be paid out at that price if it goes onto win, whether the price was correct or not.

Makes sense. And in defence of Coral, never had a problem!Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies0 -
Rule 2 is about to be changed by Tattersalls. They feel that the current wording is too restrictive in that it focuses on the 'off'. This aparently is due to the rise in 'in-running' betting.
Perhaps that will clarify things for us?

The staff member in question may have been a cashier or something though in their defence.

It's 'sadly' because bookmakers prey on the worst addiction of all which is gambling.
Anyway Sandy congratulations on making a useful post which I believe is a first for you on MSE.0 -

This afternoon I was in a William Hill bookmakers and their screens showed a race hadn't yet taken place (but was seconds away from doing so). I quickly wrote out a bet and placed it, paid the cash and recieved the slip.
Two minutes later the assistant came over and said the race had already started once I'd placed the bet, and asked for the slip back and then gave me a refund. Turns out the horse (sod's law) won!
Just for in future (not likely but could happen!), were they in their rights to do this or should they have honoured the bet as it was their mistake it got placed and their screens were showing the race hadn't started
Thanks for any advice
If the race had started the bet would be void. Any event unless its an in " play event "once started will be void. Not sure about other bookmakers but certainly in willhill.
I am a regular in a willhill shop and quite often bets placed seconds after the start of the race will be void, but the staff let it ride and if it wins you get paid and if it loses you lose. You can also ask once the bet is placed "did that bet go on" and they will tell you yes or no.Started advent comps 04.12.2013

after a race has started you do get a few seconds to still place a bet depending on how long the race is on dogs its literly a second after the hare goes
if some one writes the odds on the bet then this can also be checked that it hasnt changed depending on how long they have been holding the bet before being placed
the seconds between the horse/dog race starting an the actuall off no prices can be taken but the bet can be accepted if its in this time frame
if the bet is placed after this time depending on how many seconds late an how the long the race is then a managers discretion can be used its called a good will gesture but no odds if written will be allowed
also if u dont ask for the bet to be checked as its put on suspecting it may be late then the cashire may not actually get around to inputting the bet for a few minutes depending on how busy the shop is this means that those bets that may be late will not be discovered untill the race may have finished which means the customer is not happy if it wins
there is one simple solution to this an its called not waiting till the last second to see if the horse is at the front but the bet on in plenty of time then there is no disgruntled agry abusive customers to deal with0
