I live in Lancaster and use Booths supermarket regularly as it is just around the corner. However you have to watch their tills VERY carefully as they update their prices at head office rather than in store. It is now almost a certainty that when they start an offer, such as a 50p off or a BOGOFF, the tills are updated ages after the offer has started. We have been caught out by this on many occasions, so much so that my wife or I now check all reciepts very thoroughly before we leave the store or make sure we watch the till display when the offer items are scanned through. All you get from Booths is a half hearted apology and the overcharged money back.
Actually (sorry about this, I'm going to have a rant now I've started) Booths are a bit of a strange store. They regularly win BBC food programme supermarket of the year and things like that because of their diverse product ranges and use of local suppliers. In reality what we are finding is that it is becoming a place where you can buy things like Venison or ostrich eggs or strange varieties of oil or vinegar and other delicacies like that but try and buy a pack of Walls sausages and you've no chance.

OP, sorry to jump on your thread like that, I got carried away!

(p.s. I made it up about the Ostrich eggs, but you get the idea)

Going a little off topic but Asda double charged me for some beer - only noticed it when I got home - called them up immediately and they were very apologetic and said its a common problem and was told to return for a refund when convenient.

A few years ago I was double charged twice at Somerfield, since then I always check my receipt and I have caught a few other items double scanned, one was a bottle of wine costing a few quid (at Tesco). I always walk slowly away from the cashier scanning for double scanned items, halting by the CS desk if needs be. Peripheral vision seems to work OK, I haven't done serious harm yet, that i've noticed!

Once, when I was shopping at lunchtime and fed up with the busy shop, I got distracted and went up the CS desk in Sainsburys. Half way through my speel I realised that I hadn't been charged for an item, instead of overcharged!! Speedy change of wording and cheesy grin :D to make up for the scowl  I was wearing. I was thanked for my honesty and told to keep the item. :rotfl:

  • also remember that you are a potential regular customer spending over £100 a week or five grand a year ....would they risk losing your custom over a £1.30 mistake that in all probability was their fault ?

Well, I just popped over to Tescos again and spoke to the assistant behind customer services.. as people have said, they were fine about it, no questions asked. And as mcbain pointed out they refunded me the price of the original scan.. all I had to do was fetch one of the cartons of juice so she could scan it for the till.. and naturally they kept the receipt. So all sorted and still a happy Tescos shopper. Incidentally I bought a 3 double items tonight and noticed that they were scanned like tutchy said.. a,b,c,a,b,c rather than a,a,b,b,c,c.. Anyway, I think I'll be following Hello's example and perfecting my receipt scan-reading technique.

Brockyman- no worries about going off topic.. it sounds like Booths could do with improving their procedure for implementing re-pricing. Shame I dont have one close to me.. they sound like an interesting store.
