    Basically no!

The losing supplier can block any switch if substantial money is owed.

Otherwise they probably have lost any chance of getting back their money(except by civil action) and people can switch from company to company leaving a trail of bad debts.

    More info required.

    1. How much money do you owe?

    2. How long have you owed them?
(a debt is not a debt until 28 days after it has been formally demanded)

    3. What type of meter do you have? Credit/Pre-payment?

I think it depends on whether you owe more than £100

it's quite a bit - £400 & it has been over 28 days, however, they want me to pay it within 4 months, which i'm unable to do. they will not give me a card to pay it off, they are unable to install a pre payment meter & they will not accept my offer of paying back the debt at £5 per week, any advice pls?

Sounds like they can object on grounds of debt.

Why can't they install a prepayment meter ?.

    !!!!!! is all that about?
  • Hi why cant they fit a PP meter? There are only a couple of reasons as a rule and that is when the meter is not in your flat or it is too high for you to operate.
I have to say that your offer of £5 a week is poor, why should they wait for over 80 weeks to get their money back?
Are you on benefits? You could get your debt and consumption paid through something called Fuel Direct. Ask your supplier for help, they are duty bound to assist you if you are having problems paying for your fuel
Good luck - Hope this helps

No you won't be able to switch supplier.

I'm not surprised they have refused your offer - it will take over 18 months to pay off at that rate!

How come you owe them so much money suddenly? If there is an issue that created a sudden large bill that they may be partly to blame for (e.g. an incorrectly set DD or a lack of actual readings for some time) the supplier will generally allow the debt to be paid off over the period it was accrued.

If it was just what you consumed in the last quarter, 4 months to repay seems more than generous.

If you can't do that, they will almost certainly install pre-payment meters and put the debt on those ... but at least you'll be able to repay over a longer period.
(Let's hope they can, else they'll probably cut you off!!!)
