expert advice on replacing laptop screen for acer Aspire 5100 please : )

Options
Hello experts, I bow down to your IT wisdom and wonder if you can be of assistance in this instance!?

A rather unfortunate and clumsy incident some time ago resulted in a completely cracked laptop screen, which has totally ruined it's functionality... bad times!! I've finally come to terms with the ordeal and have saved a bit of cash to splash on bringing my laptop out of retirement... good times!!

My laptop is an acer Aspire 5100 and is no longer under guarantee.

Can you offer sound advice on:
1) where to purchase a quality but cheap replacement screen? As I simply can't afford to pay through the nose for one or take it to a rip off merchant to fix.
and 2) offer advice or a link re: how to fit the new screen myself? By the way, it would need to be a step by step instruction demonstration with images if possible (I have seen similar on youtube in the past) as I've never undertaken such a task before!

I would really appreciate any tips anyone can offer to fix my little laptop and have him looking as good as new once more :)
Warm regards, CT1

Is this step-by-step guide any use to you?

Cheapest route for LCD screens is to buy secondhand off Ebay, as there are quite a few companies that specialise in dismantling dead ones.

Wow Fwor, great advice! The guide you pointed me to seems fool proof, exactly what I need (although perhaps shouldn't speak too soon until I sort it!) SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH INDEED.

Can I just check, I wouldn't need to do anything with the Inverter board would I? Just replace the screen, yes?

Also, thanks for the ebay tip. This may now sound daft, but to clarify, do I just search for LCD laptop screen on ebay? Or does it have to be specifically for the acer Aspire 5100? I know to an expert this will probably cause you to lol, but I'm just aware someone as clueless as myself could end up bidding on the wrong item!!

Thanks a billion for taking the time to respond Fwor, this is my first time ever on a forum and I hope I can help others aswell as get guidance in the future.

    Cheers

No, the inverter should be Ok.

Yes, you will need the exact model. Although many laptops share the same panel, there are also many different ones.

It may help to remove the existing broken panel, check for a part number on the back, and search for that as well, in case it's common to other makes/models.

As I simply can't afford to pay through the nose for one or take it to a rip off merchant to fix.

When you say rip of merchant you mean someone who has spent time and money learning how to repair computers efficiently, safely and more than likely the most cost effective way.

All you will need is some time, some small screw drivers and patients when trying to remove the plastic covers. If you remove the screen you will find a label on the back with the correct model number which will enable you to order the correct replacement.

    Hi phxweb

I appreciate your reply phxweb and I know there are many IT experts out there with solid skills and experience who offer excellent services worth paying for. These are certainly not the people I refer to as rip off merchants as you seem to suggest and I apologise to anyone has read this with that slant and taken offence. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to afford such expert services at the moment and am simply seeking to find a cheaper alternative and am more than happy to improve my DIY IT skills!

To clarify, by rip off merchants I mean someone who doesn't have the skills and experience to solve IT issues but for some sad reason is happy to take one's money in disguise as an expert whilst charging through the nose for other apparent issues, which didn't even exist in the first place. Once one has been stung once, one becomes very wary of going back for more (especially when one's money is tight!)

Thanks you phxweb for you tip on IT DIY, I'll raid the other half's tool box and attempt to find the model number!

P.S Have found a LCD screen for acer 5100 laptop for £70 on ebay, does that sound about right price to anyone out there?

    Sounds about right.

Also once you get the cover apart be carfull with the main connector when removing it from the back of the screen as they can be quite fragile and bend easily.

Perhaps playing Operation as a kid is eventually about to pay off... I'll definitely be as careful as I can with the fragile components!

Thanks again for your sound advice phxweb :)
