birth certificates only work for under 18s
some banks dont even take provisional driving licences
you must have a full unexpired passport- you can renew it pretty quickly though0 -
Birth certificates are pretty worthless as forms of ID.
My 17 year-old daughter had problems getting her police check papers for her college course (Health Studies with placements in school, hospitals etc). As she had no current passport or driving licence at the time, they wanted utility bills in her name!
They settled for recent statements from her building society and young person's bank account."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -
There is a LONG list of acceptable ID for CRB checks. If you have certain things (eg passport and driving licence) then you only need 3 forms of ID. Otherwise you need 5 forms of ID. A birth certificate is ONE thing which is specifically listed on the CRB form: if you have that, then the signatory checking your details will fill in the birth certificate number on the CRB form. We do the same with passports and driving licences.ka7e wrote:Birth certificates are pretty worthless as forms of ID.

For some reason, the card you are sent with your NI No. on is one acceptable form of ID for CRB checks, although for many other purposes it's not acceptable.
Basically the checks are to establish that you are who you say you are, and you live where you say you live. Obviously photographic ID is the best thing for checking that you are (or at least look vaguely like!) who you say you are! Recent official correspondence to the address you say you're living at is the other part.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
What the CRB checks don't take into account is the age of the applicant. At 16, without a passport or driving licence, it is very difficult to prove who you are!"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0

You could try to apply online, I don't know if a visit to the bank has to be made to complete the account setup though. When you apply online the bank will do the necessary electoral roll/credit checks although I don't know if they will ask for any more ID.0

Agreed, but then it's quite unusual to need a CRB check under the age of 16: you wouldn't be left on your own with vulnerable people but would always have appropriate supervision. (At least that would be the case anywhere I've worked!)ka7e wrote:What the CRB checks don't take into account is the age of the applicant. Seems strange that banks accept passports as ID to open an account but won't accept birth certificates. I changed my name (by deed poll) before my 16th birthday and my new name appears on my passport, therefore when opening a bank account with my passport they have no knowledge of my previous names.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

The point about passports and driving licences is that they are both photographic evidence, and that you have had to jump through someone else's hoops to identify yourself to get them.Ms_Chocaholic wrote:Seems strange that banks accept passports as ID to open an account but won't accept birth certificates. A birth certificate is a piece of paper which confirms that a child was born on a particular day in a particular place.
And the bank won't care about your previous names. You can use any name you like (as long as it's not for fraudulent purposes), don't have to change it by deed poll. You may have problems 'proving' that that's your name, but if that's the name you're using now, and you can prove you're that person, they're happy!Signature removed for peace of mind0
