Painting front door

Options
Hi

My mahagony front door was painted with a water based paint a couple of years ago,now with keys etc the paint has become chipped and is down to the bare wood in places.

Im thinking of putting an oil based paint on it,do I need to sand the chipped area, and when I paint over it will it be noticeable,or any one any tips to get a nice even finish?

Thanks

I can never realy understand why people paint a hardwood door but there we are. You'll have to prep and paint the whole door. Its chipped because the door wasn't prepared properly in the first instance and the paint hasn't actually adhered to the timber. Yes it will most certainly be noticeable if you just paint over the bare edges and you'll never get a decent colour match by just patching it.
