Keeping one copy of data on an external drive is not a good backup methodology, it's not a backup, the external drive can fail or get infected.

If you backup with imaging software, and create a boot cd, you'll never need to hand it over to someone else.

Backup important data to dvd as well.

    Hello Closed
Could you elaborate for me please, what is the function of "Imaging software" and to "Create a boot cd". How would I do that?
    Thanks

imaging software creates a complete and exact copy of your hard disk, so if it fails, or windows doesn't boot, you boot from the cd, and restore the complete system including data from the backup on the usb drive rather than spending ages reinstalling windows, applications, and data.

The freeware above will work on your seagate drive, and has the option to create a boot cd for recovery.
