Battery &/or Charger Problem please help!!!

Can some one please help
I have a Compaq presario laptop the battery stopped hold charge,#
bought a new charger - that works. but the battery still wouldn't charge - so bought a new battery.
The battery is still running of the charger - not being charged.:mad:
what could the problem be?

yes plugged in not charging, won't run unless plugged in,
I have removed the new battery I have bought and the laptop is running from the mains.
could there be something wrong with the recharging circuitry?0
