Macbook Pro: Difficulties downloading onto i movies

Hi,
I have a Toshiba H10 HD camcorder. Whenever I try to download movies to i movie the best I can get is transfer to i photos.
I can then watch the movie clips( in i photos) but I cannot edit them.
Any suggestions very much welcomed!
