Home Server / Wireless Hard Drive

Hello,
We have bought a Sony Vaio HS1 Home Server - our aim is to have all our photos/files on this hard drive & wirelessly access them from both of our laptops/ our Sony Bravia TV & the PS3. My husband also wants to access the HS1 from afghan while he is there.
We've started to set it up - but it doesn't seem to be working properly, e.g. the photos don't display on the PS3.
Usually I use google to find instructions/fixes but I can't find anything other than the provided user guide.
Any ideas to help/ set-up instructions? I can follow instructions tonight & post as I get stuck. Does anyone know if a different piece of tech would be better for our needs?
My husband goes to afghan in July so we're hoping to set this up asap.
Thanks

Can you see the folder structure for the photos?
I have a PS3 and a buffalo linkstation server at home and the folder structure displays but the photos generally don't appear or if they do it takes ages to pull the information over the network.
I do have lots of folder/directories of data
I gave up and haven't looked at fixing in for a while.
I assume the photos/folders are visible from the laptops?
and that the PS3 is connected to the router/internet?
Although its called Sony and a Home Server, it is essentially a NAS netwofk attached storage device. It appears to have been released in 2008 as well.

Ok....so it is mostly set up - I just have a couple of specific Q's now...
Photos only display when in Media folder, rather than new shared photo folder - how can I edit settings on shared folder to display on DLNA?
Music files will play on PS3 but not on Sony Bravia TV - states 'There are no items to display' - why & how can I fix this?
Currently i'm set up on a general IP address & need to register DNLA devices before they can connect - would there be any advantages to setting up a private IP address and port forwarding instead?
Help would be appreciated. Really want this up & running before hubby goes to afghan!
Thanks0
