Laptop Overheating

I know this is a common problem with laptops, but I was wondering whether anyone has any tips on how to prevent it.
I have a relatively powerful HP entertainment laptop, and I use it to play games that are heavy on processing requirements. At the moment I have to use it with the battery out, on a cooling pad with three extra fans, propped up on a tray. Even then it still overheats and shuts down occasionally.
Does anyone have any suggestions, or know of a particularly powerful cooling pad that they would recommend? It isn't just this model - I always end up with this problem, and usually give up and buy a new laptop. I really can't afford to do that this time!
To clean the fan myself I have to unscrew a lot of the shell (even then I can't get to the whole fan) and every time I do it I'm terrified the whole thing will break. Do computer shops offer a cleaning service for laptop fans? If so, would it be worthwhile to get this done once every six months or so, or would that just be a waste of money?

If it has an nvidia graphics chip, there is a known fault with some of them overheating, with an extended warranty, and possibly a bios fix.!!

I have a quite large HP entertainment laptop, not at home so can't give model but its the pavillion extra wide one with a numarical keypad at side and fingerprint recognitian, now that has the same problem, most trays are too small, I got one from coolermaster, can't remember model but it's a silver wedge shaped one fits laptop exact, it now runs very cool and had no problems in 12 monthsApproach her; adore her. Behold her; worship her. Caress her; indulge her. Kiss her; pleasure her. Kneel to her; lavish her. Assert to her; let her guide you. Obey her as you know how; Surrender is so wonderful!
