Hi all, some advice and help needed please if I may.
I'm settled in a full time permanent job but am considering moving to temporary contract at my previous employer (they do not offer permanent contracts anymore)
My issue is, I'm getting married at the end of this year and we will want to consider starting a family next year.
Now, my future hubby earns around £k a year and I earn about £ a year.
These are my two scenarios, I stay where I am, earning the above, and when I take maternity leave, I will receive statutory maternity pay. What tax credits etc will I receive? I tried working it out on the 5 min benefit check up thingy and it came up with something like £15 a week…….no comment!
My second scenario is go to temp contract, where I receive no maternity pay. What tax credits/benefits will I receive now?
Does this classify as no longer working and so just living on my hubby to be’s wage?
Sorry I don’t really understand it all and would like to get a kind of accurate reading so we can decide whats best.
Thanks in advance!

The benefit check up is correct, based on those salerys you will get £20 per week for the first year and £10 per week after that.
You will also get the £20 a week child benefit.
No other benefits will be payable as you will only be entitled to the basic rate of child tax credits which is £545 per year.
But there has been talk of lowering the highest level of income for tax credits to under 50k. Which means on the income you have now you wont even qualify for the basic rate. And quite frankly I dont see why you need benefits when earning that much!
Even on just your partners income you will only get basic rate also so you are better off sticking where you are and being an extra 20 odd K better off! As with you not working you wont get any additional benefits.0 -
Thanks for the note back and for ur help. Spelt it out clearer than the government’s website.
I'm a bit taken aback by your comment. We don’t NEED the benefits at all, as you have rightly noted. We are just checking as a matter of budgeting and noting that we will ‘get by’ each month on just my partners salary (due to mortgage etc etc), we are seeing where there’s room for improvement so we don’t spend each month looking forward to payday. We are planning a family and not just taking advantage of the benefits system. I didn’t want to be judged on our salaries and in turn asking for advice. Everyone’s entitled to their share and I just wondered what ours would be.
Thanks anyway

Ignore anyone who says you don't 'need' it, if you are entitled to it then apply!

Hi ya you might get the basic government maternity allowance as you could prove that you worked for i think its 12 consecutive weeks the previous year, so your current employment would cover you. Its over 100 pounds a week and everyone is eligible if you worked the previous year.0
