The middle classes have been picking up the tax burden in recent years because they are an easy target. It's got very little to do with fairness.0

But you've forgotten rent/mortgage - I don't know the thread in question, but I assume on earnings of £350/month you'd get LHA. So with free rent/council tax on top of the £1100/month it could quite easily add up to a higher rate taxpayer's after-tax income.0 -

I hadn't forgotten rent / mortgage because as far as I was aware, rent is not paid by the government direct to the landlord, therefore the money they get is part of their top up allowances i.e. their 'net' take home pay:wall:
What we've got here is....... failure to communicate.
Some men you just can't reach.

people who earn nothing should get nothing - all this empowerment stuff makes me sick. rent should be paid direct as should bills and then food stamps for low class rank food only. no cash for these scum bags. no need for it.0

You darling.
Is this the same middle classes that are claiming almost exactly what they are paying in tax back in benefits?
Just wondering...........Retail is the only therapy that works0 -

Round here, 3 kids and on benefits would get you £1600 a month in LHA. To earn that money as a 40% tax payer, you would need to get £32k. Unbelievable £32k of your gross salary just to pay the rent to benefit levels.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
