Dell Inspiron 6000

Hi guys, my Dell Inspiron 6000 has recently developed a fault. The bottom half of the screen is black, it was not dropped and no new software has been recently installed. Could this be a screen problem, an inverter problem or a software fault.

If the bottom half of the screen is always black, right from the time you power it on, then the answer to your first two questions is probably Yes.

Some of Dell's laptops have the inverter built into the screen - which saves them money and costs you more money to have the whole thing replaced.

It cost me £125 to have the screen/inverter on a Inspiron 6400 replaced...

you should first see if you can reseat the connectors on the motherboard, occassionally the earth and the VGA cable itself for the screen come loose on the motherboard.

If part of the screen works i wouldnt have thought it was an invertor issue, screen possibly but more than likely connectivity.

Lift the bezel near the power switch with a small flat blade screwdriver to the right,

Then two screws to remove the keyboard.

Then you will clearly see the video cable and screw with the earth, unseat these and reseat.
  • Thanks for the replies, I will try to reseat the connector first then I will have a better idea of the cause.

Its not the inverter or the whole panel would go out. The controller chip has probably packed up. Replacement panels from Analogic on Ebay are under £100 delivered and can be changed by you with nothing more than a couple of small philips screwdrivers. Plenty of howto guides on the interwibble. Should take you 10 minutes or so.
