Connecting speakers to DVD player

I have a set of Creative Inspire 6.1 6700 speakers that I use with my computer. Could they also be used with my DVD player in my living room? It has three audio sockets (left/right/coxial) and my speakers have three suitable plugs. Something tells me it wont work without a decoder? I don't want to blow up my speakers or dvd player...
Any help appreciated!

Yes it will work, as long as you make the right connection from the left/right outputs, and you won't blow anything but you won't get 6.1 sound just 2.1 sound.
